North Pacific Cannery
North Pacific Cannery
As you’re walking along the boardwalk in the summer, you can smell the fresh honeysuckle planted by Karla Philippson at the manager’s house
ABOUT NORTH PACIFIC CANNERY
North Pacific Cannery Historical Site is the oldest West Coast cannery still standing! First established in 1889 by John Carthew, it was operated by the Anglo-British Columbia Packing Company until 1980. Home to generations of Europeans, Indigenous and Japanese and Chinese Canadians, the cannery is well remembered by the workers and kids who grew up there, many of whom remember the 50s and 60s at the cannery as the best days of their lives when everyone got along, shared all they had and danced the hard times away.
Hannah has a personal connection to the cannery as her great grandparents Karla and Ole Philippson lived there and managed the cannery from 1946 until 1967 when her grandfather Keith became the manager. Her mom, aunts and uncles and a few cousins grew up and lived out at the Cannery and still visit regularly with donations of heirlooms to bring the managers house back to life.
Hannah's great grandmother Karla planted the Honeysuckle that now covers the fence in front of the managers house and has been growing for more than 75 years.
"When I was little and living in the managers house. The scent of the honeysuckle on a warm day was beautiful. I would gather the blossoms and try and make a perfume so I could have the scent forever. Now 55+ years later Fishskin Fire has fulfilled my childhood daydream" - Sue Philippson-Madill
Under the management of Heather Hadland-Dudoward and the oversight of the Port Edward Historical Society, the Cannery has blossomed into an incredible tourist attraction, museum, historic site, wedding and events venue with an amazing gift shop where you can purchase Fishskin Fire candles and an amazing restaurant at Mama's Mess House.
SCENT NOTES
Warm base notes of Vanilla Cedar and Amber give root to Moss, Thyme and Rose with top notes of Bergamot, Pepper and Honeysuckle.
